How to Buy a Car from Encar Korea as an Overseas Buyer

August 10, 2026·XAPI Korea Team

Overseas buyers can discover everything from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis to BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Volvo, Tesla, Toyota and Lexus on Encar. Some are priced much lower than equivalent cars at home. Encar is an excellent place to research vehicles located in Korea, regardless of where their manufacturer is based, but buying for export involves more than clicking a listing.

This is the practical workflow for using Encar Korea as an international buyer.

What Encar is

Encar is a Korean used-car marketplace. Listings may come from dealers and other sellers, and the information available varies from car to car. Encar is the inventory source; an overseas transaction may also involve a buying agent, exporter, inspection company, freight forwarder and destination customs broker.

Do not assume every seller speaks English, accepts overseas payment or will arrange export documentation. Establish who will purchase the vehicle in Korea and who is contractually responsible for shipping it.

Step 1: Search by exact specification

Compare cars using more than the translated model name. Record:

  • Encar listing ID and URL
  • manufacturer, model and Korean badge or trim
  • year and month of first registration
  • engine, fuel and drivetrain
  • mileage and price in KRW
  • location in Korea
  • inspection and insurance-history availability

Korean trim names rarely map perfectly to European trims. Compare the actual equipment list rather than assuming that two similarly named cars are equivalent.

Developers, dealers and research teams can use the Encar search API guide to filter listings and retrieve supported fields in English.

Step 2: Build a shortlist

Three to five candidates provide a better view of the market than one unusually cheap advertisement. Compare each candidate with the median price for the same year, engine and mileage range. Investigate an outlier instead of treating it as an automatic bargain.

Ask whether the displayed amount is the complete vehicle price and whether any sale condition is buried in the Korean description. Your exporter should confirm the live price and availability directly with the seller.

Step 3: Read the history and inspection information

Look for the VIN, ownership or usage history, recorded accidents, panel repair information and inspection diagrams. “Accident-free” can be misunderstood: cosmetic work and replaced exterior panels do not always receive the same classification as structural accident damage.

Our guide to Encar inspection reports explains how to separate structural concerns from ordinary body repairs.

Step 4: Order an independent check

Even a detailed online report describes a vehicle at a particular moment. Request a current physical inspection covering body condition, underbody, fluids, warning lights, tyres, electronics, keys and a cold start. For an EV, request battery-health information and verify its charging connector and charging compatibility.

The inspector should confirm that the VIN on the car matches the listing and documents.

Step 5: Verify that it can be registered

Before purchasing, send the VIN and specification to a qualified registration or homologation specialist in the destination country. A Korean-market version can differ from a European-market car in lighting, emissions documentation, infotainment and other equipment.

Ask for a written estimate of required tests and modifications. “The same model is sold in Europe” is not proof that the Korean vehicle has the necessary approval.

Step 6: Choose and verify an exporter

Ask the exporter for:

  • registered company name, address and registration details
  • written scope of service and itemised fees
  • beneficiary name matching the contract or invoice
  • sample export and shipping documents
  • inspection, cancellation and refund terms
  • shipping method, destination port and insurance terms

Be cautious if payment is redirected to an unrelated individual, the vehicle identity is vague or the exporter discourages independent checks.

Step 7: Calculate the landed price

The listing price is not the price of a registered car in Europe. Add Korea-side fees, transport to port, freight, marine insurance, destination handling, customs duty, VAT, technical approval, modifications and registration.

Use the worksheet in our South Korea to Europe import guide. Obtain country-specific tax and registration advice rather than relying on a generic online percentage.

Step 8: Keep a complete document trail

Save the original listing, inspection material, messages, invoice, payment proof, export documentation and bill of lading. These records help with customs clearance, registration and any later disagreement about the advertised condition.

The central rule

Use Encar to discover and compare inventory, but make the purchase decision from verified vehicle history, an independent inspection, registration feasibility and complete landed cost. That turns an attractive Korean listing into a defensible buying decision.
